Fafsa Scholarships
Scholarship Information Will Guide You In The Right Direction by Natasha Bright
At one time not that long ago, women in the business field faced the glass ceiling. It was an artificial barrier constructed to ensure they did not rise too high in the business world. It also included the academic world, to be honest. Yet together, they were a lethal combination. Things have changed! Women now occupy slightly over 50% of lower executive positions.
As it stands, while there is real parity in the number of women in executive positions in management, it is a whole different story about the portion in senior executive positions. Time will eventually tell if there will one day be as many women in CEO positions as men. Until then, the fairer sex should take full advantage of the scholarships and grants that the business world has created specifically for them to enter this arena.
One of these groups is the Executive Women International (EWI) Scholarship Program. It starts getting women into the competitive spirit of the corporate world as far back as their high school junior year. Applicant names are submitted by their local secondary schools to one of the EWI chapters throughout the U.S. From there, they are judged by committees through local, state, and eventually, national panels. The prize can get as high as $10,000 for national winners.
The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting actually has three different grant/scholarship programs; each one is dependent on circumstance. The first, the Laurels Fund, awards $1,000 to $5,000 to help deserving women get their PhD in accounting.
The two remaining programs of the EFW are more about financial need, so filling out a Fafsa form when applying is a good idea. The Women In Transition is for women who are the primary earners of their household and want return and complete their accounting degrees. It provides up to $16,000 for four years. The Women In Need plan is for women in at least their junior year in college and can award a supplemental $2,000 a year.
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is an essay competition. It requires all applicants to write a 500-word essay. They must also provide two letters of recommendation as well as academic transcripts. If selected, the winner gets a $5,000 award to the university of her choice.
Then, there is the Women Grocers of America/ Mary Macey Scholarships. It is actually a sister society of the National Grocers of America. Each year, it awards two scholarships of $1,000 each to women who are going to school to study in a retail-related field and are carrying at least a 2.0 grade point average; they must be in at least in their sophomore year. The scholarship can be used for a full, four-year degree or an Associate’s degree at a community school. An online education even counts!
